Episode Summary

EDIT

Gangster Jack Wellman is moving syndicated crime into politics, killing off certain politicians and replacing them with men more sympathetic to the Syndicate. To stop him, Briggs and his team must discredit Wellman in the eyes of the Syndicate by making it appear that he's skimming funds from them.

  • Tense throughout...with a "real-time" plot and palpable danger

    9.4
To bring down mob boss Jack Wellman, Briggs concocts a plan to infiltrate Wellman's house during a gathering of mob leaders. The team poses as caterers while Barney and Cinammon try to break into Wellman's safe.

This is one of the best Season 1 episodes. It gives the whole team a chance to shine and gives us a real and dangerous adversary in Wellman. Played by veteran character actor Simon Oakland, Wellman is an ambitious mobster who has started killing political figures to increase his power. He is also suspicious, both of his colleagues and of the strange new caterers who are sneaking around his house. Watch for the scene where he accuses Dan of stealing, and Dan posing as the chef nervously defends himself. "No, Mr. Wellman, I don't steal-a nothing!"

The plot comes right down to the wire, before the team makes their escape. Again, it's nice to see everyone get a job to do. Rollin poses as a deaf waiter and almost gets discovered in an exciting scene, and it's Willy and Barney who do most of the real work of breaking into the vault. Disguises, gadgets and the big con make this a classic "M:I" episode.moreless
