  • The start of Season 3 finds the show's greatest cast firing on all cylinders.

    9.0
After a dynamite second season and with a returning lead actor, "Mission: Impossible" storms into its third year with a fantastic episode that finds the show hitting all of its marks and making it seem effortless. By this time, Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Greg Morris and Peter Lupus have their characters down and Peter Graves has had a year to refine and perfect Jim Phelps. We jump right into the mission here...no dossier scene (as if there's any doubt who Jim is going to select!)

Everybody does great work this episode, particularly Landau and Bain. Landau is not only great as a washed up doctor pressured by the secret police, but he has one of his best scenes as he removes his disguise piece by piece...in public!...during the tense climax. And Bain is given one of her meatiest roles as the poseur heir to the throne.

"Mission" was hitting this season just as the TV spy craze of the 60s was starting to wind down. Before Bain and Landau left, they at least stuck around for this season. With a formula that worked and a cast that knew what they were doing, "Heir Apparent" is a great start to what was (IMO) the last really GREAT season of "Mission: Impossible."moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • This episode has no dossier scene.

    • During the team's discussion at the beginning of the show, Willie hands Jim the special glasses that he will be using. Jim has nothing in his mouth at the time, and the close-up shows both hands fingering the glasses. The next moment, a cigarette has leaped into Jim's mouth.

    • When Rollin begins his unobtrusive strip in the church pew, one of the first things he does is remove the large patch pocket on the left of his jacket. Several minutes later, we see Rollin slowly peeling one of the lapels off the jacket--but the left patch pocket is back on.
