Season 29 Episode 11

When Things Get Broken (1)

Aired Unknown Aug 23, 1999 on PBS

  • Trivia

    • In this episode, Fred Rogers introduces his viewers to his "Mister Rogers Neighborhood" web site, which is still active and looks much the same more than a decade later.

    • In all past programs, the song for Henrietta Pussycat opened with the lyrics "You are pretty/You are black" (See Quotes). But in this, the last time anyone performs the song, Mayor Maggie tried to be more politically correct. She told Henrietta, "You are gray."

  • Quotes

    • Mr. Rogers: Computers do nice things, but they don't do everything. Computers can't do everything, but our imaginations can.

    • Mr. Rogers: I was just thinking. Have you ever made your own model of the Neighborhood of Make-Believe? You can use little boxes or blocks of wood--anything. The good thing about making your own is that everybody's can be different, not like computers where everything looks the same.

    • Mr. Rogers: You know, your own imagination is far more wonderful than any computer could ever be. You know why. You're a living human being, and a computer is just a machine. Human beings are far more wonderful than machines.

    • The original lyrics of the song for Henrietta Pussycat are as follows:
      You are pretty
      You are black
      You are beautifully dressed
      In lovely fur
      Finely curled
      Perfectly, you are pretty
      Elegant, you are black.

  • Notes

    • This was the only time in the modern series that Fred Rogers ran a "Funny Fast Film" on Picture-Picture. Of course, this sped-up film of Mr. McFeely mowing a lawn, was shot a long time ago.
