(on Kirk Gibson)
Los Angeles Manager Tommy Lasorda: He hobbled up there like a one-legged man. That's a guy who has a lot of power. He could hit a ball out of the grand Canyon. ... Here we are staring defeat right in the eyes and all of a sudden the guy hits on out.
Los Angeles Pinch Hitter Kirk Gibson: I figured if I could go up there with a guy on and the crowd into it, I could suck it up for one AB (at bat). I knew I'd be a detriment It was tough. I've got two bad legs. I'd been in the training room all day. I heard Vin Scully say I wasn't going to play. I said 'That's it.' I put on an ice bag on my knee and made it numb. I said go ahead and pinch hit Mike (Davis) for Alfredo (Griffin) and if he gets on, I'll give it my best shot.
.
(on his game winning home run)
Los Angeles Pinch Hitter Kirk Gibson: It's hard to match, a storybook. I was disappointed I couldn't play. It was tough pushing off my front foot. My hamstring hurt. I just decided to buckle down and try and go ahead and go to the opposite field. What a team!
(after Los Angeles left-fielder Mickey Hatcher ran full speed around the bases after his 1st inning home run)
Vin Scully: He's a Saturday Evening Post character!
.
Joe Garagiola: He ran in like he thought they were going to take it off the scoreboard! He really circled those bases in a hurry!
