  • Another Odd Ending

Wow. A baserunner picked off to end the game with one of the best clutch hitters in postseason history standing at the plate. It's not quite the drama of Game 3, but it's another strange way to end a game. Nice to see a clutch hit for the Red Sox tonight. This has been an outstanding Series and we will have at least two more games. I would be surprised if this does not go to Game 7.moreless

At least the game was fast moving!

Okay, that's not true, I was close to dozing off at a few times, but this was a great win and yet another crazy, unpredictable ending. That's the problem with pinch runners though, the pitcher is expecting you to run. Sometimes they can get caught stealing, they probably should more often than they do.

Big win for Boston, and one they needed to get back on track.moreless

    • Final Score:
      Boston 4 St. Louis 2
      Series tied 2-2

    • MLB dedicated Game 4 to advancing the fight against cancer through Stand Up To Cancer.
Former Cardinals pitcher and Hall of Famer Bob Gibson threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The national anthem was sung by Rascal Flatts.
God Bless America was sung by Army Sergeant Christine Permenter, vocalist with the Maneuver Support Center for Excellence and the Fort Leonard Wood 399th Army Band.

    • Boston Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino was removed from the starting lineup about 75 minutes before game time due to lower back tightness.

    • John Lackey's eighth inning relief appearance was his first since 2004.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • (on David Ortiz calling an impromptu meeting in the dugout after the fifth inning)
Boston Left Fielder Johnny Gomes: David Ortiz rallied us together. As far as the message, I think we'll keep that in house. But I think it just sums up the type of guy he is, the superstar he is. The team mate he is. If this guy wants to rally us together for a pep talk, it was like 24 kindergartners looking up at their teacher. He got everyone's attention, and we looked him right in the eyes. That message was pretty powerful.

    • (on the game ending pickoff of Kolten Wong with Carlos Beltran at the plate representing the tying run)
St. Louis Right Fielder Carlos Beltran: I feel bad for the kid. I know he's trying to steal a base or put himself in a position where he can score. But the best way for us to pick him up is to come here tomorrow and get a win.
      .
Boston Closer Koji Uehara: (through an interpreter) It was the first time for me to end a game like that as far as I can remember.
      .
St. Louis Pinch Runner Kolten Wong: I was ready to go from first to third with Carlos driving me in. Went to plant, and my back foot just came right out of me. From there, I was dead. I knew I was dead once it happened.

    • Boston First Baseman David Ortiz: Let's loosen up and let's try to play baseball the way we normally do. I know we are a better team than what we had shown. Sometimes you get to this stage and you try to overdo things, and it doesn't work that way.
