      • (after a career low .234 batting average for the season)
Cincinnati Catcher and World Series MVP Johnny Bench: Last year was certainly more exciting, more so than this one. And last year might have been more gratifying for me personally. I can't believe what a relief it has been to play like this after having some almost nothing all year. I may have played better games in my career but, taking into consideration the situation and the magnitude, I have to say this is probably my finest single game.

      • New York Catcher Thurman Munson: They beat us tonight. They beat us this time, they beat us four straight, they beat the hell out of us all the way through. What else is there it say?
        .
New York Catcher Thurman Munson: There are two ways of looking at it. The self-satisfaction is super. We all have big egos and, from a personal standpoint, the hitting (.529 Series average) is super. But five years from now, all they're gonna remember is that we lost the Series in four straight.

      • Cincinnati Manager Sparky Anderson: (to coach Alex Grammas after Johnny Bench's 9th inning home run) I got news for ya, Sugar Bear. We are going to be World Champions again. We are now going to be World Champions again!
