Episode Summary

Claire and Phil decide to reprise their role-playing adventure from last year's Valentine's Day. Meanwhile, Jay's surprise plans for Gloria keeps getting interrupted, and a secret admirer comes between Cameron and Mitchell.

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • Even better than series one Clive and Juliana

very good but also Mitch and Cam

    Jay and Gloria were ok
  • Valentine's episode 2

They are back as Phil and Clarie's egos Clive Bixby and Julianna are up to their "cheating" ways. I cant decide if the first time with Clive and Julianna was better or this one. The ending was funny and not something you would expect after what happened in the hotel. (You have to see the episode). The scene where Phil and Claire in the hotel room was also funny. Jay and Gloria also had a good part. I like how they both try to "win" Valentines Day. What I like about this is that it doesn't turn into a big fight. Speaking of arguments, Cameron and Mitchell had good one too. It was funny when they both think Mitchell's assistant was coming onto them. I also like that it does not turn into a big fight. I also like how the writers and producers are not clear on who the assistant was coming to. The only bad part was Manny trying to help out Hailey with her boyfriend. While Manny is not officially her uncle, it's just weird he was hitting on her. But at least was not being a perv about. However this was a very good episode.moreless
  • Clive Bixby and Julianna make their big return.

Another pretty solid episode of Modern Family here. I really liked the whole plot involving Clive Bixby last season, and it was nice to see these alter-egos of Phil and Claire make a return here. I personally find themed episodes of shows really forced and boring, but there was a nice rhythm to the episode, the way that all three families were all at the same restaurant at one point and the way the families criss-crossed in subtle yet funny ways. The only plot I didn't like was with the kids.. just really lame for the most part.

However, this was Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen's episode. The whole mix-up with the hotel rooms between Phil and Claire was a bit cliche and sitcom-y, but one thing I've noticed about this season of Modern Family is how they find interesting ways to circumvent sitcom cliche. They do the same type of plots, but in their own Modern Family-ish way. And for once, I felt like all three plots had equally funny outcomes/plots.

And is it just me or was the Manny being infatuated with Haley very "George Michael being obsessed with Maeby" from Arrested Development? Slightly different circumstances, but a similar idea.. I definitely liked this episode though.moreless

The Valentine's Day episode of Modern Family was pretty memorable last year, and they had another decent one here today. Again, this show is not nearly as funny as people would lead you to believe, but there were some humorous moments here, mainly in the scenes that did not involve the uber-annoying little troll Rico Rodriguez. Ty Burrell was good in the episode, although this did not help the notion that he has modeled his comedy style after Steve Carell's Michael Scott character on The Office. But a decent episode here. I usually hate on this show to no end as you all know, but this one was not too bad.moreless

Modern Family hasn't necessarily blown me away by an episode, or impressed me all that much, especially as of late. But this episode blew my skepticism out of the water. I really enjoyed this episode, I enjoyed ever single story line except maybe minus Hayley's story line. The episode was almost perfect until Haley's boyfriend started singing that ridiculous and unfunny song.

Phil & Claire were hilarious, and this was just as good as last year's Valentine's episode from what I remember. Gloria surprising Jay really was unexpected, and Mitchell & Cam's story line was good too. Overall, a great episode of Modern Family, really took me by surprise.moreless
