Phil and Claire decide to switch parenting roles for a day, while Jay gives entrepreneur advice to a friend opening a dog training business, and Cameron comes down with the flu on the night of a Lady Gaga concert.
  • Phil and Claire switch roles and Gloia and Jay get a dog

    "Great"
Another brilliant episode from Modern Family. The only bad/weird part was the Claire and Phil part. Something was missing when Phil tried to be tough and Claire as easy going. It was funny to see them act different. I liked that they realized they couldn't do it, especially Phil.
Because I am a dog lover, I liked the part with Gloria and Jay. I like how Jay always shoots from the hip and his advice is met to be helpful and not hurtful. I like how has a soft spot in his heart and grows attached to the dog.
The part with Cameron and Mitchell was also funny. I like how Mitchell and Cameron turn into helpless babies when they are sick. I also like how Mitchell tries to justify leaving Cameron to go to the concert, while trying not to be mean or a bad boy friend. The start of the episode might have been the best Mitchell I have seen. I like at the ending when Mitchell goes to the concert and Cameron is not offended by it.
    An overall funny episode.moreless
  • Alex: Dad, we haven't had lunch yet. Phil: Neither have half the kids in Africa. Stop yappin' and get back to work.

Jay: So Gloria brings home yet another man who wants Jay for careet advice. The turth is his inventio is awful. It's a "good doggy/bad doggy" thign where if your dog deos something bad, you give him a bad doggy treat and if he deos sth good, you give a (you guessed it) good doggy treat. Jay is honest and tells the dude his invention is truly awful and the dude is at first crushed but then thankful.

Mitchell: HE basically wants to go to a LAdy Gaga concert but Cam is sick and wants attention. Then when Cam0s sleeoing is about ot leave when busted, but Cam goes to sleep again and he leaves. But he is busted in the credits stinger.

Phil-Claire: They have a role-reversal whre Claire is fun & Phil is strict. But Clarioe goes seriosul overboard and is dangerous & scary & Phil also goes overboard as becomes a supervillain. Thanks to the kids they eventually go back.

Overall: It was a great episode. I liked all plots. Cam's was a little slow but the ending made it worth it. 9/10.moreless

    "Bad"
"Good Cop Bad Dog" even the poor attempt at creating a clever episode title should indicate that this was not a strong episode of Modern Family, not that too many of them are anyway.

That weird guy who wanted advice, I don't even know what the point of that was. Then to randomly have Jay give the Manny the dog as an act of kindness. What a cop out that could be seen coming from a mile away.

I guess that Claire acting like "the good cop" was mildly amusing, but Phil as "the bad cop" was anything but that.

I try to tune out anything Lady Gaga related, but that is not why the Cam and Mitchell storyline was lame, it just was poorly-written.moreless
  • The good and bad sides of the characters come out.

    7.6
    "Good"
First off, before I go off on my own little rant about the episode, I'd like to agree with the reviewer below who said the rating system on this site sucks. Anybody who thinks "Modern Family" deserves to below a six, which I believe delves into "mediocre" territory is insane. The show is not that bad, even at its worst. And unfortunately, this episode didn't do much to improve upon the Mother's Day episode and doesn't do much to make the show seem like the Emmy award winning show it is.. but it's also not a 5.6. I know that much.

This episode is one that lands about half of its jokes and faceplants the rest of them. Last week's was one of the lazier episodes the hsow has produced, and while I wouldn't go as far as to call this one worse, it wasn't better either.

The theme of the episode seemed to revolve around people who do good things taking the bad guy role for a little while and vice versa. The funniest plots here were the ones that kept it simple and realistic. For instance, the idea of Phil (who's easily the pushover dad) taking on Claire's family role as the bad guy. It works so well because the show has lead us, over two seasons, to see these characters a certain way, and the plot here contrasts the way Claire and Phil usually act with a new and foreign one, which makes it even funnier. The highlights here are easily when Phil leaps on top of the car as Alex and Haley are driving away, fury in his eyes, and also when Claire pushes Luke's car into the wall while go-carting. There's just something about Claire force-feeding her children to seem like a cool mom that makes for big laughs.

Cam and Mitch's plot is a bit less funny but still intriguing. Cam and Mitch get Lady Gaga tickets, but Cam gets sick, leaving Mitch wondering: should he go to the concert or stay home with his sick husband? As I said before, it's definitely less funny, but I liked watching Mitch's desperation in trying to get to that concert. I also liked the quick cut to showing what Cam does when Mitch is sick (carries him like a baby!)

The anchor of the episode is Jay and Gloria's plot. Who says that this show has to include every set of characters in their separate plots? Why can't the show combine each family more often? As a result of not doing this, we get weird plots like this that seem extremely lame and seem forced to fit the particular theme of the episode. Jay walks into the house and finds a random guy sitting there. Turns out he's an inventor and Gloria found him on the street and wants Jay to listen to an idea he has to pitch. See, Gloria believes that Jay's experience in business will help this man. But it turns out the man's idea stinks. So Jay has to be mean.

It's a very pointless plot that doesn't even try to be truly funny throughout.. in fact, the only part I liked was when Jay said he had no idea who the man in his kitchen was, but Gloria does this all the time, so it was fine. However, we never see Gloria do this, so it seems even more like a ploy to fit every single plot with the same theme. And that montage of scenes at the end of stuff we JUST saw in this episode? Terrible.

That being said, why do I give this a 7.6 instead of a 2 or a 3? Because I've never seen an episode of television that deserves that low of a score. That's reserved for truly horrific television (Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, Sixteen and Pregnant). The episode here is effecient and has plenty of funny moments, but sometimes, it's the bad moments that shine the most in good shows.moreless
  • The rating scale on this site, sucks...But this was a pretty good episode

    8.5
    "Great"
Decent Episode....My least favorite couple was actually the best plot.

    A)Claire/Phil & The Kids:
Normally, I find Claire and phil rather...ugh. Claire annoys me usually because she blows EVERYTHING out of proportion and Phil annoys me because he is literally a real life portrayal of Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson...He is a complete moron

However, they switched roles in this episode and this actually worked perfectly....Claire as usual makes a big deal about everything but this time she was the "nice parent" and it was actually funny
While Phil's dumbfounded behavior was refreshing to see by his attempt at being a tough guy to the girls.

    B)Cam & Mitchell
Cam is obviously the funnier of the two although Mitchell is quite funny...as long as his plot doesn't directly tie into Cam.

Cam's sick and Mitchell wants to go to the Lady gaga Concert(I don't blame him).

This plot was okay but for some reason it seems like the writers seemed to write excellent plots for Jay/Gloria and The Dunphy's and just kind of give Cam & Mitchell Filler plots.
This could have been a great plot but it just felt....flat to me.

Especially the ending with the flashing necklace...Seriously? He didn't even realize that the necklace was still on?

    C)Gloria & Jay
These 2(besides Cam & Mitchell) are my favorite pair and tonight I was a bit disappointed.
The writer's often portray Gloria as incredibly stupid or portray Hispanic/Latina stereotypes....which are funny sometimes but it typecast her character.

She's gorgeous to look at and every episode she always has low cut shirt...and this is coming from a gay male. It seems like they are focusing on her looks for plots or her stupidty whether then allowing her character to grow.
Give her a plot that showcases a different side of Gloria..

Jay, as usual is pretty funny but this plot with the dog business was kind of dumb but overall funnymoreless
