Modern Family's latest episode, "Mother's Day" was a lot like most episodes of this show and most actual Mother's Day holidays, pretty boring. I do not know if they even got a chuckle out of me. The show has always been known to fall for sitcom cliches, but we had the jackpot tonight. The alleged "tough" Dad crying, a gay couple debating who the man and woman was etc. etc.

The show has really been stagnant lately, but surprisingly it still does pretty good numbers. This is one of the few comedies that has not fallen off in viewership which is surprising as it is one of the few that has fallen off in quality.
  • Claire and Gloria try to have a good Mother's Day, while Phil catches Jay in a sensitive spot.

I felt as if Modern Family was sort of re-finding its groove in this second half of the season, but man, this episode was just sub-par all the way. It felt like a lot of by-the-books jokes and an ending that felt overly sentimental, and for a show that delves a lot in sentimental endings, that's saying a lot.

It's a Mother's Day episode, so you know you can expect a lot of Motherly type stuff. Claire wants to have a nice Mother's Day with her family, so along with Manny and Gloria, they all go together on a hike. However, Haley, Luke and Alex complain the whole time, so Claire freaks out and leaves with Gloria from the kids.. here, Claire convinces Gloria to come out of her shell and admit that Manny sometimes annoys her. From here, we get awkward moments, Claire's children refusing to apologize for their behavior and a whole lot of drama that somehow manages to come across as unfunny.

Meanwhile, we get Jay and Phil cooking dinner together where Phil thinks he sees Jay crying after reading a poem he wrote for his mom awhile ago. While I appreciate what this means as a character arc between these two characters, I thought there wasn't enough of a pay-off, since it seemed to exist simply to tie everything together at the end.

That being said, I enjoyed Mitch and Cam's plot a little more than the rest. Tell me it wasn't funny when Cam went to take a picture with the rest of the mother's and had on the most vicious and annoyed looking face in the world on.

However, one good plot isn't enough to make up for some extremely lame writing and and overall unfunny series of scenes.
  • Luke: I say we eat what we kill. Manny: Then I guess we'll be eating the mood.

Cam: Mothcell decides to deidcate a full day for Cam to thank him for everyhing he does for Lilly, but infortuately, that day is Mother's Day. Cam is them upset all day cause Mitchell & everyone in the daycare think of him as a "honorary mom". But them Mitchell gives him some speech and he gets over it.

Claire-Gloria: Hiking with their kids. The kids comment on how much they hate it there so C&G just go to the summit alone. There Claire convinces Gloria to critizice Manny a bit, unfortuntetly, he is overhearing. Clarie they tries to patch things up but Gloria makes up a story to cheer him up and they reconcile.

Jay: Cooking with Phil, Phil finds an old recipe kid Jay worte to his mom called "The Perfect mom" which made him cry but he tried to deny it. Then Phil told everyone and Jay tries to deny it agani but breaks down in the dinner, and the whole family goes "d'awwwwwwww".

OVerall;: It was an enjoyable episode. I really want one pair of onion-proof glasses now. Also, the Gloria-Manny relationship looks kida creepy, doesn't it? 8.5/10.
