It aired a week too late. Should've been the season premire.
A great episode. Reading the description I thought I would side with Cam in the Cam/Mitchell plot, but I sided with Mitch until at Jay and Gloria's house.
I love how this episode REALLY brought out Jay's character.

A good episode that was maybe a slight drop off from the first episode. I always like seeing characters grow up. Alex took a step toward that. Alex has always been someone who acts older then her age. It's good to see her like act more like a normal girl. It was funny when Claire, Alex and Hailey were at yelling at each other. Phil and Jay always had a unique relationship. It was very funny when Jay Called Phil and how quickly Phil literally dropped everything to come over and help me. I enjoyed how Phil explaining to Jay how the printer works the same way he did with Claire earlier with the TV. I also enjoyed Mitchell and Cameron's spat. It's funny how Mitchell doesn't like affection in public, like his father.. When they do kiss, I like how it was not a big deal at least how I think. Another funny part is the joke Gloria played on Jay. An enjoyable episode from beginning to end.moreless

  • Hilarious and another one of those episodes where every plot flows together seamlessly.

People make such a big deal about Cameron and Mitchell not kissing, but if I'm being honest.. does a show have to be about couples showing affection towards each other? When do we see Phil and Claire kissing that often? I agree that it seemed strange that Mitchell and Cameron never kissed on screen before, but I'm also glad they held that plot off for a little while. With everything we know about these characters, it made so much sense to have Mitchell have a fear of PDA. And with Jay still struggling to completely come to terms with his son's marriage to Cam, their inability to kiss in front of family or in public makes sense. And this episode was fantastic for dovetailing that plot in with two other ones. Sometimes, the show has difficulty tying together plots, but I was impressed this week.

The three plots are as follows (actually there's closer to four or five plots): in the Dunphy home, Claire interrogates Alex about having a boyfriend after she reads some of her texts. She tries to get Haley to talk to Alex about it, and at the same time, Haley questions whether Claire was actually the good girl she claims to be. Phil gets excited to head over to Jay's house and help him hook up a printer to print out a picture of Gloria's grandmother. Meanwhile, Gloria claims she's been visited by her grandmother's spirit in her sleep and that she's been following her and helping her with stuff. Jay is skeptical and makes fun of her while Manny grows afraid that his house is haunted. And in the Mitchell/Cameron household, Cam grows upset at Mitch's inability to kiss him in public. It sounds like a lot is going on in the episode, and there is, but the way the writers tie it all together is very impressive.

And the lines.. oh man, there are some classic lines here. While Cam certainly deserved his Emmy last year, Phil should definitely take it this year. He was hilarious in every scene without going too over the top, whether it was his condescending song he sings to Jay to explain how to use the printer or his gag reflex to the smell of paint.. he's just a goofy man who had some great lines. And Gloria and Jay had a great plot to work with, with Gloria making up a bunch of different customs that Jay had to follow as revenge for him making fun of her grandmother. Watching Ed O'Neill slap chickens and scream at them made my night.

Everything worked out perfectly in the episode, and I was surprised at how real the episode felt, compared to some of the show's other episodes, where we have Edward Norton playing the bassist of an old band Phil and Claire liked. There were great moments from every character, and for the second consecutive week, I found myself very impressed with Modern Family.moreless

Performance of the night goes to....Sofia Vergara? Man, I never thought I would be writing those words, but it was the case here tonight as she was just hilarious from the get go and made the best of the weak material she was given during the talking heads.

I am not much of a "people falling over = laughs" kind of guy, but when Cam fell over the couch and knocked over the chip bowl, it was hard to not chuckle.

Alex having a boyfriend, let alone the new and lame Morgan Corinthos on General Hospital, is something I could do without though.

5.5/10 Decent episode by Modern Family standards.moreless
