  • Like some of the people said below me, It was eventful-less

I was the worst fore Jay and Gloria. Well the memorability was just not there. The Phil spa moments were not funny at all.
  • Hailey and Alex fight; Phil goes to a spa

I don't know why the rating for this episode is so low. I liked this episode. Cameron has always been a reactive person and we see this on display again. This time it's warranted a bit. I like how Mitchell tries to fix it. I also like how Mitchell says he will try to change. I also like how Phil tries to get Claire to go to the spa but ends up going anyway. I also like how he listens to the women at the spa and tries to actually be a better husband. When Phil goes to the spa you don't lose respect for him at all. I liked the result of Hailey's and Alex fight. I liked that the ending of their fight was not the typical sibling fight ending in most family sitcoms.moreless

The most uneventful episode of Modern Family I have ever seen. The laughs were non-existent, and I just found myself rolling my eyes at most of the scenes. The low ratings on this website are definitely well deserved, and we got this episode to prove that.

Phil going to a spa? A story line focused on Alex and Haley? Really? We got the usual cliches and not a lot of laughs, and the Cam/Mitchell plot was annoying as ever based on how predictable and unfunny it was.

I did crack a laugh at a scene involving Jay/Gloria, just because Gloria's character always amuses me but that's about it. Best comedy? Are you kidding me?moreless
  • Claire mediates a fight between Alex and Haley, Jay and Gloria argue about where to be buried while Cam learns some tough news about Lily's adoption (oh, and Phil goes to the spa)moreless

For an episode that had plots that weren't all that important, I think the episode was as good as it was because the individual jokes throughout the episodes were spot-on tonight, whereas other episodes have a premise that is perfect but jokes that fall flat overall.

For me, the best back-and-forths were between Jay and Gloria. I'm not sure how much I believe in their relationship (they never kiss or show any physical attraction towards each other.. at least not Gloria towards Jay) but they have an undoubtedly entertaining relationship, one that's based on a lot of arguing and making up. That dynamic is brought up again in this episode, this time because Jay wants to be buried in a crypt indoors, while Gloria is freaked out by being buried indoors. I thought that Jay, Gloria and Manny had plenty of little moments that more than made up for how insignificant the plot itself seemed. The whole "spring in your step line" that Manny says was pretty funny, and the whole "Ta-Da" argument was just typical quirky comedy.

Surprisingly, Phil wasn't too involved in the episode. The writers decided to stick him in a spa, and while we get some slightly funny moments that make fun of him being a feminine man (the episode "Chirp" is still the best example of this), it felt pretty dull, as did Claire's whole plot with Alex and Haley. Honestly, it didn't even feel like there was a resolution there.

The title of the episode actually comes from a short story that Cam is writing for Lily to hear while she grows up. Here, we see some tension between Cam and Mitchell again, and while it's nice to see the way that they're brought together again, I'd love to see this show occasionally focus on a long term plot. Even Friends had moments where they'd carry on certain plots into other episodes and make a mini-arc. Modern Family lacks any of this, which is a detriment sometimes.

Definitely an entertaining episode of Modern Family though.moreless

Modern Family has been overrated and overhyped since its season premiere, but they have had a few decent episodes during its run, and surprisingly this was one of them. I know all of the signs point to this being a bad episode, but it actually was not. Nearly everything Phil said here was funny, and I have been missing the days when Phil Dunphy was amusing. Jay had some good lines too. I would have liked to actually see some scenes with Claire going from store to store searching for the sweater; missed opportunity for some laughs there.

All in all though, quite an above average episode for the family.moreless
