Episode Summary

EDIT
Cannons
AIRED:
Cannons have fired balls of iron and atomic bombs, changed the way wars are fought, and now come equipped with smart weapons. Beginning with 13th-century cannons that were designed to penetrate forts of the day, we'll see how cannons were first cast and later forged, and show how large cannons terrorized civilians and soldiers in WWI and WWII. Moving to the present, we feature the 40-ton self-propelled Crusader that launches 100-pound steel artillery shells more than 33 miles.moreless

    • TRIVIA (6)

      • More artillery shells were fired in the Korean War than during all of World War II.

      • The Aiken relay computer contributed the word "debug" to our vocabulary when the first computer "bug" was found in its mainframe: a moth crushed on the relay switch.

      • The Paris Gun could launch shells to a maximum altitude of 25 miles. This was the greatest altitude reached by a man-made object until World War II's German V-2 Rocket.

      • In 1844, President John Tyler had the new Navy gun Peacemaker fired during a demonstration aboard the USS Princeton. Unfortunately, the gun exploded, killing several people, including the Secretary of the Navy.

      • Goof: 16" shells are obviously not the "size of Volkswagens." They are the same weight as Volkswagens.

      • Goof: The Iowa class 16" guns were not the biggest naval cannons ever built. The Yamato class used 18" guns.
