    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Typically, crews are able to recover only about 20% of the oil spilled on rivers. That was the approximate percentage recovered from the 1988 spill in Floreffe, Pennsylvania.

      • Of the three most prevalent radioactive elements identified at the Santa Susana site, cesium-137 has the longest half life at 30 years. Dangerous amounts of it will remain there for about 300 years.

      • Since the 737 debuted in 1968, Boeing has built over 5,000 of the planes. That makes the 737 history's best selling passenger airplane.

      • After the original bell was recovered from the wreckage of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a replica bell was put in its place. The names of all 29 crewmembers were inscribed on the replica, which serves as a permanent grave marker.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: A seeming unsinkable ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald disappears into the dark waters of Lake Superior. Investigators search for the cause of two deadly Boeing 737 crashes. In 1959 a nuclear disaster near Los Angeles is hidden from the public. An oil tank collapse unleashes almost 4 million gallons of oil and microscopic gremlins knock out everything from satellites to personal computers. Now, Engineering Disasters, on Modern Marvels.
