      • At the Battle of Chancellorsville, Stonewall Jackson was killed by fiendly fire. His party was mistaken for a Union calvary force by Confederate troops and fired upon. Jackson was hit by three bullets. His arm had to be amputated and he died eight days later of pneumonia.

      • The Spencer Rifle was so instrumental to the Union's victory at Hoover's Gap that one member of the brigade wrote his wife: "Our men adore them as the heathen do their idols."

      • The country's first arsenal, the Springfield Armory, was founded by George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and offically designated in 1794.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: It was a war in which brother fought brother, where battlefields became slaughterhouses, where the technology and ingenuity of an industrial revolution were put to the task of making the most destructive killing machines the world had ever seen. From the Springfield to the Spencer, from the Napoleon to the Gatling Gun these were the first truly modern weapons. Now: The Guns of the Civil War, on Modern Marvels.
