Hoover Dam
AIRED:
By any measure, it was a daunting task to tame the Colorado River, the waterway that had carved out the Grand Canyon. To make things worse, the site chosen was in the middle of the desert, far removed from any towns or infrastructure. This episode ventures into the Southwestern Desert to tell the complete story of one of the seven engineering wonders of the world -- Hoover Dam. See incredible footage that documents every step of the monumental work of taming the Colorado to provide water and power to California, Nevada and Arizona. From the blueprints to reality, this is the story of the ingenuity and manpower that literally moved a river and sculpted a mountain of concrete. That it was completed in only seven years is all the more remarkable.moreless

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • From 1939 to 1949, Hoover Dam's power plant was the world's largest hydroelectric installation. It is still one of America's biggest facilities.

      • Herbert Hoover, champion and namesake of the dam, only visited it once during construction - in 1932.

      • Roughly a hundred workers lost their lives creating Hoover Dam. Coincidentally, the first and last persons killed on the site - J. G. Tierney and P.W. Tierney were father and son.

      • Lake Mead, the reservoir created by Hoover Dam, contains enough water to cover the entire state of Pennsylvania with one foot of water.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: The task monumental and for many, deadly. Building the world's largest dam in one of the most unforgiving climates on Earth. Nothing like it had ever been attempted. Now, Hoover Dam, on Modern Marvels.
