      • 4.8 billion gallons of water are flushed down toilets every day in the United States. This accounts for 38% of household water usage.

      • Some historians believe that the fall of the Roman Empire was hastened by lead poisoning from plumbing pipes, which caused widespread illness, dementia and death.

      • A two story outhouse built during the 1900s in Crested Butte, Colorado still stands today. The upstairs was used when deep snow made the lower level inaccessible.
