      • The Baikonur Cosmodrome is the world's oldest and largest working space launch facility. Built in 1955 as a long-range-missile center, the site was later expanded to include space-flight facilities.

      • After Voshkod 1, the Soviets did not attempt another three-man mission for another seven years. Soyuz 10 lifted off on April 23, 1971 on a mission to link up with the Salyut 1 space station.

      • By 1954, Soviet cosmonauts had logged 455 hours in space - nine times as much as the American astronauts.

      • Sputnik 5 was launched into orbit on August 19, 1960 with the dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats, and a variety of plants on-board. The spacecraft returned to earth the next day and all animals were recovered safely.
