      • The short-barreled blunderbuss was designed to scatter shot at close range, making it popular as a weapon for boarding ships. The blunderbuss was the weapon of choice of buccaneers and pirates.

      • In the Old West, stagecoaches carrying valuables usually has at least one guard armed with a shotgun riding in front of the coach, next to the driver. This practice led to the term "riding shotgun" used for the person who sits in the front passenger seat of a car.
