Episode Summary

The Colosseum
Nothing symbolizes the Roman Empire at its height or Rome in magnificent ruins more than the Colosseum. Built in 70 AD, it seated 80,000 people, boasted a retractable roof, underground staging devices, marble seating, and lavish decorations. It still serves as the prototype for the modern stadium. The complexity of its construction, the beauty of its architecture, and the functionality of its design made it the perfect place for massive crowds to congregate for the bloody spectacles it contained.moreless

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Most of the marble seating in the Colosseum was stolen in the Middle Ages and recycled in palaces and churces throughout Rome.

      • Contrary to popular belief, there is no conclusive evidence that Christians were systematically fred to the lions in the Colosseum, although they were put to death in many other amphitheaters.

      • Archaeologists have found evidence of 110 drinking fountains and two very large lavatories in the Colosseum.

      • An inscription found at the Colosseum suggest that the stadium was financed with the plunder of Jerusalem, which Rome conquered in 70 AD.
