    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Woods that are ideal for making musical instruments are known as "tonewoods" because of their unique ability to conduct sound vibrations.

      • Typically, just 45-50% of a pine or fir log can be veneered into plywood. Some of the rest will be lost as waste or shrinkage, but the remaining center core can be made into a stud or fence post.

      • U.S. lumber manufacturers shipped nearly 39 billion board feet of softwood lumber in 2004. That's enough to build a bridge more than 30 feet wide from Earth to the moon.

      • 8,000 years ago, nearly 15 billion acres of forest covered the earth. Today, forests cover only about eight and a half billion acres.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: A $200 pile of plywood? A stack of rare African veneers worth 20 grand. This is where you'll find the various woods used by the construction industry. Whether it's timber from last week or a hundred years ago, or fifty thousand years ago, it's all cut, shaped and prepared by an army of workers with an arsenal of mighty tools. Now, the Lumberyard, on Modern Marvels.
