    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • HEPA vacuum filters were developed during World War II for the top secret Manhattan Project to remove radioactive dust from labs in which the atomic bomb was constructed.

      • The typical carpet is home to 100,000 live dust mites per square yard, but normal vacuuming only effectively removes the dead ones than can no longer cling to the floor.

      • By 1915, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, Boston and St. Louis had a combined 56 miles of pneumatic mail delivery tubes beneath their streets.

      • In 2005, the Army Corps of Engineers used dredges to vacuum the equivalent of 12,750,000 dump truck loads of silt from marine channels.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: Nature may abhor a vacuum but we seem to love them. They clean our floors and deliver medicine, they've got the suction power needed by industry, they're first on the scene at catastrophic sites and they battle algae that's destroying coral reefs, they even cut out hair. From little suckers to industrial giants, now: Vacuums, on Modern Marvels.
