World War I Tech
AIRED:
The first bombing airplanes and widespread use of chemical weapons...earliest tanks...submarines. When Industrial-Age technology and war first mixed on a large scale, the end result was ruthlessly efficient destruction. World War One epitomized the dark underbelly of the Industrial Revolution. We see how technological achievements that streamlined 19th-century production, improved transportation, and expanded science were used to efficiently decimate a generation of soldiers in the early 20th century.moreless

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • A young Adolph Hitler was hospitalized during the First World War after being temporarily blinded by a poison gas attack.

      • Although the flamethrower was developed and used during the First World War, it was a technology that made so stratigic contribution. It frequently malfunctioned, often enveloping the two-man crew in flames.

      • Few airplanes had radios during the First World War. The radio's bulky size and its inability to transmit extended-range voice signals made it impractical.

      • "Tank" was actually the code word, short for water tank, that the British used for early armored vehicles, such as the Mark I, produced in secret during the first years of the war.
