Yard Tech
AIRED:
In the 21st century, turf grass is the number one crop grown in the U.S. When suburbia exploded after World War II, turf became the defining characteristic of nearly every yard. First, it's off to the research greenhouse facility at The Scotts Company to learn how grass seed is bred for special characteristics. Then pay a visit to the Toro Company, a big name in lawnmowers. The Rain Bird Company and its automatic sprinkler systems is the life giver to thirsty lawns across the country, and The Davey Company specializes in moving trees in excess of one million pounds. Finally, take a trip to California Waterscapes and watch as a crew installs a waterfall and koi pond.moreless

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • In 2000, Gary Hatter crisscrossed North America on a lawn mower during a 260 day journey from Portland, Maine to Daytona Beach, Florida. He drove nearly 15.000 miles, setting the world record for the longest lawn mower ride.

      • A typical front lawn produces an air-cooling effect equal to that put out by three central air conditioning units.

      • As much as 65% of the water sprinkled on a lawn during midday is lost to evaporation.

      • In 2000, The Davey Tree Company executed the biggest tree move in U.S. history – relocating a 75 foot tall White Oak in New York State that weighed more than 1,084,000 pounds.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Narrator: The seeds of a revolution are in our own backyard. Gadgets that mulch, vacuum and turn on a dime, yardwork's no chore when mowers push themselves and sprinklers check the weather report. Don't like your grass? Just roll out a new lawn, reengineer it or fake it. Place one call for instant shade or even something fishy. Now: Yard Tech, on Modern Marvels.
