      • There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the playing of this game. Earlier in the day, disgruntled ex-SFPD member Dan White had assassinated San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk.

The NFL opted to play the game at 6 p.m. Pacific Time, despite protestations from many in San Francisco to call the game off, citing contractual obligations to ABC. As the game went on at Candlestick Park, thousands of mourners marched through the heavily gay Castro district of San Francisco to City Hall.

      • This would be San Francisco's last appearance on MNF until the last game of the 1983 season. The 49ers were in the midst of the first of back-to-back 2-14 seasons. The 49ers had been slated for two MNF appearances in 1982, following their victory in Super Bowl XVI, but both games were wiped out by the NFL players' strike.

      • Despite the 49ers' spectacular ineptitude of the late 1970s, this marked the second straight year that San Francisco and Pittsburgh played on MNF. The Steelers mauled the 49ers 27-0 in Three Rivers Stadium to open the 1977 season.

This marked the second time that match-ups between AFC and NFC teams were featured in both 1977 and 1978. Baltimore defeated Washington at home in both seasons as well.
