'Monk' looks at final season - USA show to end following eighth season

"Monk" will soon be solving his last case.

USA Network said Friday that it is giving its long-running hit series an eighth- and final-season pickup with a 16-episode order.

The final season of the show, starring Tony Shalhoub as a brilliant detective who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, will debut in the summer.

I'm somewhat upset but happy at the same time. At least we know when it's ending and will be able to get the perfect and appropriate send-off. At least we get the rest of Season 7 upcoming and then 16 more episodes of Season 8 to finish the series off.

    Really exciting!

I am sort of glad about the news. This way the show will go while it's still good and also a planned ending like this whould even increase the quality and tie up loose ends and give Monk the send off it deserves!

    Monk had a good run.

I'm happy - so long as he solves Trudy's murder.

Sigh, why not just cancel Psych, Heroes, Chuck, and Sanctuary so I can throw my TV set away once and for all.

This makes me sad, what happened to shows that lasted to the 10 yr mark? __I thought we had at least till then, I don't get it.__ Monk is a decent, family show, sometimes Randy cussed too much but decent enough that I watched it with my 10 yr old son. __It seems like they take off the good shows and replace them with shows that are nothing but sex and whatnot. __I think this show could have gone on indefinitely, at least I could have watched it indefinitely without ever getting sick of it. __I really hope that it ends happy and Monk finds out who murdered Trudy. __I don't know if that will make him happy, but that is what I would like to see, Monk happy.

Yeah it had a good run, alot better than many many shows now a days. Plus it's a good thing they know when it's ending so there will be no rush and they'll have no excuse not to make the last episodes good. And as long as they solve Trudy's murder and the killer isn't the oh so obvious Dale the Whale, I'll be happy.

Things I'd like to see happen at the end of the show...

1: Monk finds Trudy's killer. (duh)

2: Monk getting back on the police force; or, Monk deciding that he can help more people as what he is as opposed to a cop; or, Monk possibly dying and being reunited with Trudy. (Ok, so I wouldn't like the last one too much, but it would make him happy)

3: Dale the Whale becoming thin. (It'd be kinda cool if they could use him that way as a villain)

4: Monk getting cured of most - if not all - of his fears.

5: (optional) Monk falling in love with someone (possibly Natalie) and moving on with his life.

    Anybody agree or disagree?

Well at least they told us in advance, rather than treating one of their most legacy properites like garbage like they did with Dead Zone and 4400 by sending them off without even knowing if the final episode was a series or season finale.....and of course now USA has nothing on worth watching....well....except Burn Notice, I hope they keep that show around for a while.

Well this is bittersweet news. Sure it's sad that Monk is ending, but at least it will end on a high note. Who knows? In the final episode, I see Monk finally solving Trudy's murder, possibly get reinstated and get most of his phobias under control. And possibly get a new love interest and move on with his life.

Haha, these are my favorite! And who knew that purple was Monk's color? Love the flashy jumpsuit.

And I know it's ending after season 8... but let's cheer up-- we have season 7 starting on January 9!

I'm not sure what "regularly" means to you, but Monk is on the same schedule it's had for the past five years. They show eight (or nine) episodes in the summer and eight (or seven) episodes in the winter, for a total of sixteen episodes per season. Monk is a cable series so they don't have the 22 episode fall to spring model that the networks use.

The seven new season seven episodes of Monk will begin airing on January 9th 2009. They finished filming season seven about a week ago. They'll begin filming the first part of season eight in March, assuming there's no SAG strike going on. Season eight will start in July 2009 and conclude in the winter of 2010.

In true MONK fashion they should wait till the 10th season to end the show why because 10 is a perfect number
