Season 5 Episode 16

Mr. Monk Goes to the Hospital

Aired Friday 9:00 PM Mar 02, 2007 on USA

  • Trivia

    • Dr. Scott, played by Dan Butler was wearing a short white coat. The type of white coat he is wearing is traditionally for medical students, and those in training. The other doctors and medical students wore the longer white coats. As a rule of thumb, the longer the coat, the more years of training.

    • The doctor who cauterizes Monk's nosebleed is not wearing gloves. Even though she is not treating an open wound, she should be wearing gloves based on the fact that he is bleeding and she had no ideas what diseases he could have.

    • Throughout the episode, Monk is tilting his head back because of his bloody nose. This is a common misconception of first aid treatment for bloody noses... the correct treatment is to instead tilt the head forward while sitting upright so that the blood does not run down the back of the throat which may cause gagging, coughing, vomiting or choking. Considering he was in a hospital for quite some time you'd think at least one doctor or nurse (especially the two that treated him) would take the time to correct this even though they were busy.

  • Quotes

    • Hank: (to Randy) What is this, your first day with a new brain?

    • Monk: What's she doing?
Natalie: She's holding up her finger?
      Monk: The bad finger?
Natalie: No, Mr. Monk, the pointy finger.

    • Dr. Scott: Are you under a lot of stress.
      Monk: I wouldn't say that..
      Stottlemeyer: I would.

    • Natalie: My boss needs me.
      Alex: How do you know?
      Natalie: He always needs me.

    • Disher: My next crime scene. I'm not going to say anything. Just going to write everything down and copyright it.
Stottlemeyer: Yeah, you copyright everything in your notebook.
      Disher: Maybe I will.

    • (investigating the crime scene)
      Stottlemeyer: What is that?
Hospital Administrator: That looks like a seal. That could be from one of our oxygen tanks.
      Stottlemeyer: (reads label) Room 623.
Disher: 623. All right, let's go!
Administrator: Lieutenant, that's the geriatric ward. If he's a patient up there, he's at least 80 years old.
Disher: Well then, we better move fast!
