  • And now for something completely different...

The "Fairy Tale" episode of "The Monkees" is clearly unlike any other episode of the series, with no Monkee pad, no Monkeemobile, no "Monkees" per se at all. There are barely any references to the usual stuff of the show, but instead the episode tells us a story in the simplest way, with cardboard sets, a blank soundstage, and faux-medieval costumes. What's left is the attitude and the same basic characters of the four guys, with one exception: Michael's hilarious turn as the princess, with sideburns intact. We can feel how freed everyone is from the shows usual conventions, resulting in one of the funniest episodes of the show. It's a pure delight from beginning to end, and it's unfortunate that this episode on the DVD boxed set of the series' second season is so poorly restored. But the show itself is "The Monkees" at its anarchic best.
