  • In the Beginning!

    8.5
In the Beginning! was a really great pilot episode and beginning to a great journey with many adventures, characters, and landscapes. I really enjoyed watching this episode because it layed the groud work for the series. Genki is a young boy who loves his video game about Monsters and some how he is transported to the real world version of the game. This is almost the boys version of Alice in Wonderland, as Genki joins a young girl named Holly and her monster Suezo in a quest to find the Phoenix which will restore all the bad monsters into good ones again. I thought the characters were interesting, though I know they get more depth and complexity down the road, they had a great introduction. The animation style is fun and unique. This is only the beginning of a great series!!!!!!!moreless
  • Nostalgic.

I still remember watching this episode several times as a kid, brings back great memories. Everything feels like a recurring memory. What I didn't realize about this episode back then was how well executed it was for a pilot episode. Most animes are prone to having bad or slow starts because they try to establish the characters and the setting all at one time. In this case, the pilot episode was actually pretty fun to watch. First we see the inclusion of one character within the party from the get go in Genki, and then it ends with another one as well. Good episode overall.moreless
  • Pilot episode...proves good promise

    8.2
This was the very first episode in the monster rancher series. Its the story of a kid named Genki that gets transported to the world of monsters. These are the same creatures that he battles in his playstation-like game consol at home in the real world. This was basically the backround story telling episode. It showed all the veiwers what the show was going to be about. Personally I liked it, it has a great feel to it. My favorite part is all the different kinds of creatures that inhabit the land All in all great pilot, great series.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • (in Genki's room; on his TV screen, Suezo spits at the Black Dinos chasing him and Holly, but eventually splatters outside of the screen and into Genki's face)
Genki: (falls over) I could be wrong, but I think I just got spat on!

    • Captain Black Dino: (concerning Mocchi) Sorry excuse for a monster. But I am partial to this shade of pink. I think I'll keep it as a pet.

    • Genki: (about the Baddies) I don't think that Moo should get away with that. It's just not right!
      Captain Black Dino: Oh, really?!

    • Black Dino: Return the Mystery Disk!
Suezo: Not to you guys. No way! (Spits at them, and they trip.)

    • Monster 200X Game: Long ago, when the world was still one big continent, a great disaster occurred. The disaster left an emptiness in the world, and emptiness that was soon filled by new lifeforms. Over time, battles erupted and some of the new lifeforms were hidden away, imprisoned. Humans were entrusted with their guardianship. Many generations have passed and some of the imprisoned lifeforms have been released. Many more remain hidden, waiting for the moment when they come to life.

  • NOTES (7)

    • Deleted Scenes: The English dub of the episode cut several scenes.

      - When The Team Big Captain shakes hands with Genki, he tries to squeeze Genki's hand to intimidate him.  Genki winds up squeezing his hand into submission, much to the Captain's surprise.
      - After climbing the tree at the campsite, Genki drops in on Holly and Suezo speaking from all the way at the top.  This shakes the screen and startles Suezo and Holly.
      - After this, Genki gets too close to Holly, prompting Suezo to get in between them and slap Genki around with his tongue.  Genki holds his face in what looks like pain, but reveals that he's smiling about something.
      - When Holly and Suezo tell Genki about Muu, Genki starts to cry angrily, presumably about Muu's tyranny.
      - When Genki throws his Playstation at the Black Dinos, it smacks Captain Dino in the face.
      - When Holly and Suezo fight the Dinos to buy Genki time to awaken his Mystery Disc, there is a still shot of Holly smacking one of the Dinos with her frying pan.
      - When Captain Dino takes Mocchi as his pet, Genki reaches out to Mocchi with a stirring speech, which seems to inspire/comfort Mocchi.  Captain Dino tail whips Genki to keep him away.  Mocchi kicks and screams, which causes Captain Dino to drop him.  When Captain Dino pins the fleeing Mocchi under his foot, Genki skates up to him and dropkicks him in the chin, as seen in the dub.

    • Just before the first commercial break a song called "Unlock Your Disk" which introduced some of the monsters from the series played in every episode in season one. There were only a few that were replayed throughout the season.
