  • A medieval gaol in arguably one of the most haunted towns in England. Surely they'll discover something!

I have to give Yvette credit. Still new to this series, how can anyone spend 24 hours - in the dead of night - at some of these creepy locations without a few nerves fraying? That - and probably the stress of being the young show's producer - could likely explain why Yvette breaks down and cries inconsolably in the bowels of Derby Gaol. Then again, maybe there is something in the location (I'm a skeptic, so I'll say the former). Skeptic or not, what happens to the cross in the locked off room gives me goosebumps. Time lapse or not, the sight of the paper ruffling, followed by the abrupt movements is compelling.moreless

At first the Derby Gaol investigation seemed like any other investigation, however the crew were well unaware that they would catch some of the strongest evidence to date!

Derek Acorah arrived on location, and as usual did not know where he was coming. Some of the information he was coming up with was very interesting, however it was vary vague. He mentions a hangman, and people being hung, drawn and quartered. This information fits in with the history of the gaol, however it also fits in with almost every gaol in England and is too vague to consider it hard evidence.

While in the Dead Man\'s Cell, Yvette suddenly burst out into tears. This happens for no apparent reason, and not even Yvette knows why this happens. Yvette had not done this on any previous investigations and seems to be totally out of her character, but the possibility of her subconsciously being upset or frightened cannot be ruled out, however I think she really was picking up on the emotions of the residual energy in the cell.

The Dead Man\'s Cell was also giving off a strange cell at random occasions. The strong smell of roses would quickly come and go, with no known source for this. This again is very strong evidence, and the investigation team were sure that no one was wearing perfume or aftershave.

My favourite piece of evidence in this episode is, of course, the moving cross. Jason Karl set up a trigger object in the Dead Man\'s Cell. He closes off the cell and no one entered it until Jason came back to check on the trigger object - and it had moved! What makes this better is that the cross was actually caught moving on camera. Although the tape can technically be scrutinised because all angles of the paper cannot be seen, I don\'t think anybody could have performed the movement like it was. You can see the paper \"bubbling\" as if something is blowing under it, and then the paper suddenly jerks as if being pulled. If someone was doing it there\'s a high chance of seeing the tips of their fingers, or the shadows around the cross changing, but this does not happen.

Orbs were also caught flying around however I think these could easily be dust or insects by their movement. I also think the crew were over reacting to their appearance.

Overall it was a fascinating episode, and some startling evidence was captured. All the activity took place in the Dead Man\'s Cell, and I would like to have seen more of the gaol. However, with all the activity taking place in one location it was easier for the investigation to take place. It\'s a shame evidence like this isn\'t caught all the time, however if it was we\'d end up getting bored and wanting more convincing evidence. This episode deservedly ranks amongst my favourite Most Haunted investigations, and Derby Gaol as one of the most haunted locations in Britain.moreless

    • Jason sets up an object manipulation experiment by placing a wooden cross on a piece of paper, and then tracing around the cross with a pencil to show its set position. When he returns, the cross is no longer positioned within the outline he has drawn, and a preset camera has footage showing what occurred. While the Most Haunted crew declare that the cross itself has moved, it can be plainly seen that it was actually the paper itself that moved, jerked slightly from underneath the cross, making it seem as if the cross moved. Before it moves, one can clearly see the paper lifted on the far right side of the cross, and then the paper humps up twice in the foreground, which may well be the result of someone sliding a finger under the flat paper in order to give it a tug!
