Welcome to the Mother Love guide at TV.com.

Mother Love was a four part dramatisation of a novel of the same name by Domini Taylor, which was first broadcast in 1989. The drama starred Diana Rigg in a BAFTA winning performance as Helena Vesey, the embittered ex-wife of acclaimed conductor Alex Vesey (David McCallum). Helena holds a suffocating affection for her son by Alex, Kit (James Wilby), a barrister. For years Kit has lived a double life in which he has seen his father behind his mother's back, fearful of what she might do if she were ever to find out. When Kit suddenly manages Angela (Fiona Gillies), his new wife is uncertain that she can keep up the lies, but soon she too is drawn into the web of deceit. When the unbalanced Helena finally learns the truth, it becomes clear that she will go to extraordinary lengths to have her revenge...

Mother Love was directed by Simon Langton, adapted by Andrew Davies, script edited by Devora Pope (Tenko) and produced by Ken Riddington (Tenko, A Horseman Riding By - both featured on TV Tome). The haunting music for the series was composed by Patrick Gowers.moreless

The leading actors are all very good, especially Fiona Gillies, but whoever thought the script was remotely acceptable? This heady Freudian brew could have done as agonisingly realistic (which would have been hard), or simply as ranting melodrama, with Diana Rigg enjoying herself in the manner of Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" or Gene Tierney in "Leave Her To Heaven". Instead, scriptwriter Andrew Davies has obviously reacted to the subject simply with contempt, which he has not bothered to disguise. The plot proceeds absurdly, supporting characters are ridiculous (in particular, the two insensitive police investigators) and there is no compassion for anyone - so why bother?moreless
