Mr. Sunshine isn't very funny. It's a terrible shame, but it just hasn't gotten to that stage where it can deliver laugh out loud material with any consistency yet. There is a certain sense of charm about everything that is going on and it keeps you waiting for something hilarious to happen, but then the 20 minutes is up and you're not quite sure what to think. The cast is great and the central characters are already becoming defined, which is actually a fairly decent effort for a sitcom in just four episodes. There is a weekly guest star of some kind which thus far has been executed without feeling forced or cheesy and the general premise has been laid out; Ben's life sucks and no one really likes him.
I said last week that if Mr. Sunshine could move itself into a more coherent plot line that it would become exponentially better, but I don't see that happening somehow. At the moment it is just a series of episodes that are mostly unrelated, in fact the only thing that even really lets you know that these episodes are even from the same show (aside from the cast and the set) is the relationship between Alonzo and Alice. In "Hostile Workplace" most of the somewhat funny moments came from the interactions of Alonzo and Alice and it's these kinds of relationships that need to be formed throughout the characters. If there are more interesting interactions that we actually care about that can also bring about the typical sitcom situations in which hilarity ensues, this show will only be better for it. I just hope they sort it out quickly!
