  • A bully, some bad guys and a real cute assistant. All of these and some power pills. What more could a Mr. Terrific fan ask?

Like most of the Mr. Terrific series, Stanley the Fighter has not been run in the U.S. since 1967. However, a batch of episodes from German TV distribution have recently become available, this title among them. While the dubbed in German dialogue is a little difficult to follow, the visuals pretty much tell the story.

A fight manager (Leo Gordon) is operating a counterfeiting ring out of a gymnasium. Reed and Trent ask Stanley to nose around the gym, giving him some power pills in case of trouble. Hal, elated that his buddy is taking an interest in physical fitness, innocently tags along.

Hal confronts a professional fighter named Tiger (Charles Dierkop), when Tiger's girl makes eyes at him. Tiger sucker-punches Hal and pushes Stanley aside. Unobserved, Stanley powers up and makes Tiger look like a chump before knocking him through a wall.(A great scene accompanied, of course, by the MT theme.) Archie (Gordon) and his goons make Stanley an offer he can't refuse: take Tiger's place in an upcoming bout against Killer Kane, or else.

Reed encourages Stanley to go ahead with the fight. By taking his one hour pill, Stanley will easily be able to stand up to Killer Kane long enough for Reed and Trent to search the gym for the printing press.

A cumbersome boxing glove causes Stanley to drop his pill ringside. While Hal searches for it, Stanley is knocked cold. Disgusted, Archie has his boys toss Hal and Stanley out and heads back to his gym.

Stanley takes the pill which was retrieved by Hal. He hops on a conveniently abandoned bicycle and speeds over to the gym just in time to save Reed and Trent from the gang.

This ep pretty much has it all, as this series goes. There are some very good sight gags, some scenes where Strimpell and Gautier look like a real team, and a couple of great "Mr. Terrific clobbers bad guy" moments.

This is apparently also the episode that introduced "George." Hal has hired an assistant to help around the garage, but "George" is not what we, or Stanley, expect: a guy. George is played by Bonnie Hughes, a cute and energetic actress who might just make tuning in worthwhile all by herself.moreless
