  • Trivia

  • Quotes

    • Cross: Justine, every lawyer that I know wants to be something else. Right now, being Ted Hoffman's partner might seem pretty big, but trust me, the day will come when you'll want more.

    • Appleton: I'd forgotten how much I liked Holbein.

Cross: Simply magnificent. The use of color, the balance of the composition. But I think the thing that draws you in the most is the darkness. Nobody handled darkness like Holbein.

    • Hoffman: After hearing about Fletcher I let up on a witness who might have given Neil a reasonable doubt.

      Annie: How reasonable?

Hoffman: Honestly? It was a fishing expedition, but it would have wrecked the guy, so I dropped it.

Annie: Then you did the right thing.

Hoffman: My job description reads 'defense attorney', not 'all-around good guy'.

  • Notes

    • This chapter didn't air originally. ABC skipped this episode entirely.

    • Guest star Richard Schiff (Stan Fletcher) and series regular Mary McCormack would later appear together as regulars on The West Wing. In addition, guest star Kathleen York (Cheryl Dreyfuss) would later play the ex-wife of Schiff's character on The West Wing.

  • Allusions

    • Richard Cross asks Justine to bid on a Holbein painting in Amsterdam. It isn't clear whether he means Hans Holbein the Elder (1460-1524) or his son Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543). The son is mostly known for his Renaissance portraits, the father for his darker work in the late Gothic style. As Richard Cross admires the darkness in the painting, he probably refers to Holbein the Elder.
