Giant Rat of Sumatra
At the travelling circus, Uncle Walter paints over a billboard for "The Amazing! The Unbelievable!! Spectacle of the Giant Rat of Sumatra", which Randolph Walker explains was actually a hairless dog that had died of cold that winter.
In Doyle's The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire, ostensibly inspired by these events, Sherlock Holmes tells Dr Watson of the Matilda Briggs, "a ship which is associated with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared."
