New Englanders refer to being from Maine as being from 'down east' -- this fact is revealed when Jessica asks a young man if he is from 'down east' and he responds 'No, I'm from Maine', to which both Ethan and Jessica comment that it means he is not from the area as anyone from Maine would have agreed that they were from 'down east'.
Introduced in this episode is Cabot Cove resident Leo Peterson (formerly known as Leonid Petrovich), who defected from Russia during World War II. This is also the third time Jessica speaks with the unseen and unheard telephone operator Letitia.
Skip Fleming: Well, if no one objects, I'll just get the hell out of here. Jessica Fletcher: I was about to suggest the same thing, Mr. Fleming.
(Jessica asks Irina and Skip to wait in the living room.) Jessica Fletcher: You wait right here, and I'll go make a phone call. (heads for the kitchen, where she knows the phone is bugged) Skip Fleming: What's wrong with this phone? (points at the phone in the living room) Jessica Fletcher: Well, that phone isn't bugged.
Mr. Nagy: Major, I lost Mrs. Fletcher. Major Anatole Karzoff: Lost her? In a town the size of a postage stamp?
