  • A detective and a dog? Where's Jim Belushi?!

Another non-Jessica episode, "Jack and Bill" stars Ken Howard, an immensely likable actor who has made appearances on the show before. I don't know if the producers were setting up Bill Boyle and his canine cohort to be regular pinch-hit sleuths, but I for one would have liked to see them again after this episode.

Bill Boyle is lazy, uncouth and cheap...yet he's a lot of fun in this hour. He can get tough when he needs to, and he has enough brains for his work. If this was a pilot, I'd sign on for the series that followed.

As someone in the midst of a long-term dog-sitting job, I can empathize with Boyle and Jack. Though my dog and I haven't solved any crimes yet, I can understand the relationship (and I've even caught myself talking to the dog on a number of occasions!)

A strong outing sans our leading lady, one of several vacation episodes for Angela Lansbury in Season 6.moreless

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Bill Boyle: Hang on a second, I gotta make a phone call.
Maria: We are in a bit of a hurry ...
Bill Boyle: I know, but this will only take a second. See, I got a brother-in-law with the Los Angeles police department. Now, he's not exactly into dog-napping, but he might be curious about a woman who says she's married to a bachelor and doesn't even know the name of the dog she's picking up.
Maria: Well, Mr. Boyle, I have identification. (she produces a gun from her purse)
Bill Boyle: I'd rather see your driver's license.

    • Accountant: I have good news and bad news for you, Mr. Boyle. Good news is you won't have to pay federal or state income tax this year.
      Bill Boyle: Hey! That's great!
Accountant: Bad news is you can be picked up any minute on a charge of vagrancy. (beat) A little CPA humor, Mr. Boyle. You're broke.
Bill Boyle: So I'm broke. It's an up-and-down business.
Accountant: You heard about the 'up' from a friend?
