EDIT
Joshua Peabody Died Here ... Possibly
AIRED:
Plans to build a new hotel in Cabot Cove are put on hold when diggers discover an old skeleton that had been buried deeply that many of the townspeople believe to be the remains of Joshua Peabody. Not everyone is thus inclined though, and many people believe it's just a random dead body. But when Jessica and Amos head back to the dig site, they find there's another body there! Jessica not only has to find out who killed Wheatley, she has to help an old friend when his past comes back to haunt him.moreless

This episode is unique because it introduces William Windom as Dr. Seth Hazlitt, Jessica's friend and part of the trio, along with Jessica and Amos, who stumble into murder in Cabot Cove. Windom remained with "M,SW" all the way through the final season.

As for the mystery, the story about the planned development and the protest is good, but in my opinion the identity of the murderer came out of left field. This was one of the few times I felt the writers were not playing fair with the clues, and you'd be hard pressed to figure this one out on your own.

Still, it is a nice Cabot Cove mystery, quirky enough and revealing of the town and its occupants that made it such a great setting for the show.moreless

    • Leo Kowalski: You sure are persistent.
Jessica Fletcher: Well, I've been described in less flattering terms, believe me.

    • Sheriff Tupper (walking into Dr. Hazlitt's office): Listen, Seth, if you can tear yourself loose from killing off your patients ... you got to get over to Main Street quick! And bring your bag!

  • NOTES (1)

    • In an interview with the Archive of American Television in 2000, Tom Bosley recalled an incident from the filming of this episode. Arriving on the location for the excavation scene, the crew found four men with shotguns who would not let them film on their property. The reason was because they were growing marijuana, so the crew dug the excavation pit on a park nearby. Universal Studios later built a parking lot over the hole as payment.
