  • Back to Cabot Cove, with a new sheriff and two (possibly) murderous spinsters!

This episode is silly, which is not a bad thing at all.

"Murder, She Wrote" did dark comedy very well, and this episode is a great example of that. From the reveal of the corpse in the living room to the mayor's dog's discovery of evidence, "Mr. Penroy's Vacation" is a very light-hearted show. This comes in spite of the fact that it has one of the higher body counts of the series!

Ron Masak makes his first appearance as Mort Metzger, the new law man in Cabot Cove; everyone is instinctively distrustful of him as he hails from New York City! I like his interactions with Jessica and Seth, and credit is due to the producers for not casting someone identical to Amos Tupper. By throwing a new dynamic into the mix, the show stays fresh. Mort seems more competent than Amos, but is not above turning to Jessica for help.

This episode marks a new era for the show and a new tone to the Cabot Cove episodes.
