This episode is great for a number of reasons. First, it is a classic, early-series Cabot Cove mystery, with an emphasis on the nature and occupants of the town. This tended to get lost in the later, "globe-trotting" years of "M,SW." We see more of the relationship between Jessica and Amos, and see how hard it is for Jessica when one of her oldest friends is revealed as a murderer.

    SPOILER WARNING...

It also boasts one of the neatest solutions the show ever used. The plot to flood the town with letters to mask the "real" one was clever, and it had the added effect of creating additional suspects. John Astin departs the series (could this guy have ever really been sheriff?!) And anyone who thinks that Angela Lansbury phoned in her peformance as Jessica Fletcher need only watch the denouement of this episode to see how wrong they are.moreless
