  • Searching for a killer at 20,000 feet...

A variation on Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," this episode finds Jessica and the guilty party trapped on an airplane along with the other passnegers and crew. It's a small pool of suspects, but trying to determine how a murder could be committed in a crowded first class cabin is not going to be easy.

Kate Mulgrew (later of "Star Trek: Voyager") does a nice job as the Hepburn-like actress diva whose personal assistant winds up dead and her necklace stolen. The rest of the guest cast acquits themselves very well, including the charming inspector who befriends and assists Jessica in rooting out the thief, or so it seems. Once again, it's nice to see Jessica drawn in to an investigation at the request of others, because of her background in forensics and investigation. It's that knowledge that pinpoints poisoning as the cause of death.

The tension works in this episode, as there is only a short amount of time to identify and arrest the suspect before the plane lands, so there is a "ticking clock" aspect; it's a nice departure from the usual leisurely pace of "Murder, She Wrote" episodes.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Goof: When Blanton is found dead, the flight attendant's scream upon finding him causes all the passengers in first class to jump immediately to their feet to see what's the commotion. Just moments before, they were all seen buckling their seatbelts under instruction of the pilot due to turbulence, yet no one is wearing seatbelts when they react to the scream.

    • Before the plane lands in London, Jessica places a phone call to Inspector Crimmins at Scotland Yard. She had previously worked with Crimmins in the episode Sing a Song of Murder.

    • Goof: At the end of the episode there are some scenes supposedly at Heathrow Airport. In the background there is a sign leading to "Ground Transportation". The word transportation is rarely used in the UK and would never be seen at any airport. Transport is the word which is used.
