  • Not a typical episode, but good nevertheless.

While not a "traditional" episode, "Trials and Tribulations" is a solid outing for "Murder, She Wrote" and shows that the series could still be strong when departing from its formula. For one thing, the show opens with an helicopter/van chase sequence that could have come from "Magnum PI." Next, much of the plot references an off-screen case from several years earlier, as Jessica finds herself the target of a wrongful death suit. And lastly, the murder of the week is deceptive and leads to a very surprising conclusion.

As a paralegal, it was interesting (and more than a little funny) to watch the legal scheming throughout this episode. It sucks, but there are people (and lawyers) unscrupulous enough to file big nusiance suits that are frivolous in the hopes of exacting a settlement. We do a lot of work for financial institutions at my firm, and we see that all the time. As the shyster lawyer tells Jessica, the fact that you're innocent rarely applies in a courtroom.moreless
