My Family never claimed to be particularly original or groundbreaking as comedy, but as the seasons have gone by, the old formula has steadily become eroded as a source of laughs and it's become increasingly apparent that the programme has gone well past its use-by date.
This Christmas special is a typical showcase of My Family's increasingly tired attitude toward itself. It's filled with old jokes that long ago lost their punch and cheap laugh lines that can barely raise even a wry smile. Thirty years into the future and the Harper household is no less disfunctional. Ben and Susan are into their eighties, although to look at Susan, you'd never notice. Meanwhile Michael is having a mid-life crises, Janey is conciderably bigger and Roger is conciderably smaller.
