  • An excellent episode, but not without its flaws.

My Gym Partner's a Monkey is a show that is grossly misconceived as being a show revolved around jokes about monkey butts. That couldn't be further from the truth, as the series does provide some clever laughs, some jokes on par with The Simpsons. This episode is a shining example of some of that particular humor style.

Save Your Drama for my Llama: This segment involved Ingrid, who is considered the weakest link in the main troupe of recurring characters, as no one is really interested in her fuchsia acacia leaf (apparently a rarity for giraffe-kind). Enter Lola Llama, played by Sarah Hagan, who offers to be Ingrid's best friend, after the gang dismisses her foliage discovery.

However, Lola quickly becomes popular with the others as well and soon imitates Ingrid to the point of extending her neck African style. Soon after, Ingrid gets fed up with this, after being "arrested" for jimmying her own locker. The episode does provide some laughs and character development for Ingrid especially, as she proved the Beware the Nice Ones trope right. Hagan does a great job as Lola, pulling off not only the pleasant Lola but also the insane part of her persona as well. The character design for her is grotesque and actually gave me shivers.

Hornbill and Ted's Bogus Journey: The title is a clever play on the 1991 film Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, but the Ted in this episode is not a time travelling metal head. Ted, played by comedian Lewis Black, becomes sort of a leach to Mr. Hornbill, insulting everyone he sees. Adam and the others do not take kindly to Ted's heckling so they try to lure him to another rhino at CDMS, preferably outside the facility.

This one wasn't as great as the previous segment, but it gets brownie points for having Lewis Black as a guest starring role. His design looks like a caricature of his real life looks. His heckles remind me of Statler and Waldorf off the Muppet Show (the two old guys in the balcony).

All in all, these episodes are an essential watch for those who feel MGPAM is nothing more than a toilet of a show. The later episodes (at least after season 1) lay off the Jake's butt jokes, as the writers probably hated them as well.moreless
