  • Not exactly the best CMC episode.

    6.5
I hate to say it, but out of all the Cutie Mark Crusader based episodes this series has had this has got to be the weakest one of them all. The story begins with Applebloom bringing a school newspaper to Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. The two fillies use the paper to make a paper boat, packaging material, and to build a bird's nest. After they confront Applebloom again, the two friends learn she wants them to get on the school paper to get their cutie marks. The next day, the CMC stay behind to become part of the school paper, but learn Diamond Tiara is the editor of the paper. The CMC is tasked with getting a scoop for the paper, but every article they bring makes Diamond unhappy. The CMC then discover Snips and Snails having gum on their flanks and get a picture of it thanks to Featherweight. Diamond is happy with the results of the article and finds out the CMC is calling themselves Gabby Gums since they can't fit their names into the newspaper. Diamond orders the CMC to get more gossip and they gladly do. However as time goes on, the CMC feel a little guilty about how hurtful the articles are making the other ponies. Eventually Rarity finds out about Sweetie Belle and her friends being Gabby Gums after an article about her and her diary is produced and the diary is found in Sweetie's saddlebag and scolds her for it. The CMC decide to quit, but when Diamond has blackmail on the three fillies they have no choice but to continue doing so. Diamond gives the CMC until tomorrow for a Gabby Gums article or else she'll print the blackmail picrutes for the paper. Across Ponyville, everypony turns against the CMC and shuts them out of their lives and the CMC contemplate on what to do. The next day, the CMC bring about an article for Gabby Gums making Diamond happy once more. However, Diamond reads the paper and discovers that the article is an apology from the CMC telling all of Ponyville they're sorry for what they did, that they should've respected everypony's privacy, and ask for their forgiveness. The town and the Mane 6 eventually forgive the CMC for their actions. Cheerilee then comes down to where the paper is being produced and takes Diamond off as editor and replaces her with Featherweight. The episode ends with Diamond getting ink on her as the newspaper staff laughs at her. This episode while good, has a lot of issues to it. Don't get me wrong I like what they're teaching about privacy and gossip being awful, but this could've been a little better. Granted I did love how the CMC interacted in this episode and I thought they had some good character development in this episode. The moments with Pinkie Pie were great and funny especially with her article. Some of the articles were hilarious as well; especially the Mayor's article. There are three main problems with this episode though. One, Rarity was a hypocrite in this episode completely. Up until the article about her, Rarity was okay with the gossip and was just contradicting herself with how she acted. Now granted she did try to teach Sweetie about privacy and acted a bit like a parent to her. Two, everypony was just way too harsh on the CMC. I understand the citizens being angry and the Mane 6 as well, but this was just downright mean and heartless. The Mane 6 didn't let the CMC explain their actions at all and didn't even talk to them; even Applejack and Big Macintosh were beyond harsh and cruel. If they just talked to the CMC episode about what they did was wrong then I'd accept it, but not this really. Three, Diamond Tiara got off WAY too easy in this episode for punishment. She doesn't get a real comeuppance at the end and I think that's unfair. I mean the CMC suffered far worse than her so called punishment. She was the one behind this whole thing and she didn't get a proper just desserts ending. Personally I wanted to see Diamond get an embarrassing article printed about her; that would've been really good. This though, she got off too easy and I think it's unfair that the one behind it all doesn't get a proper punishment while the CMC get the full blunt of the harshness. Overall, it does have its great moments in it and the moral is nice, but this episode really could've been a little better than this and it's certainly not the best CMC episode.

    FINAL SCORE: 6.5/10moreless
  • Worst possible thing

    10
Worst episode ever. Just an April Fools Day joke. Well, the CMC returns in style in this episode. A new school paper is out and with Diamond Tiara as boss. It's no good and everypony is hurt by this. Applejack think the newspaper is fun just until the hurtful articles comes along. The farmer pony ends up depressed as Twilight creates a huge clear globe around her house after the bad gosspis. There is a load of highlights like Applejack in the spa, Princess Celestia on front of the school paper, Snips and Snails returns and more. I can only recommend you to watch this episode.

  • I don't know how to put it this way but this episode reminded me of the SpongeBob episode "The Krabby Kronicle"

    7.0
The Cutie Mark Crusaders' latest efforts to find their cutie marks leads them to the school paper. As reporters under the pseudonym "Gabby Gums", the three fillies write a gossip column that reveals all of Ponyville's juiciest secrets. However, disrespecting others' privacy comes with a heavy cost: a guilty conscience and the mistrust of all their friends. I thought that this was a good, if not, just a decent episode of "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic". It wasn't the best episode I've seen this season but that's not to say that it's the worst of the season because it isn't. "Secret of My Excess" is the #1 worst episode for Season 2. I like this episode and it had potential to be an excellent episode but it just failed at being perfect. A GOOD score is still good though. This episode is pretty similar to the SpongeBob episode "The Krabby Kronicle" though. Sorry if it seems like I'm comparing those two episodes but it's pretty true to me. Diamond Tiara doesn't care about hurting other pony's feelings and only wants the juiciest stories into the newspaper which is similar to what Mr. Krabs wanted. The Cutie Mark Crusaders don't like the idea of hurting everypony's feelings.... same thing with SpongeBob. Everyone in Ponyville gets upset and angry about their privacy being exposed on the newspaper.... same goes to the citizens of Bikini Bottom. Okay, enough with comparing this MLP: FIM newspaper episode to the SpongeBob episode. Let's just get to the real idea here, the storyline was just dragged up and all. I hated Diamond Tiara in this episode and I also hated how she blackmailed the Cutie Mark Crusaders by publishing embarrassing photos of them unless they continue to find juicy stories. Of all the episodes that Diamond Tiara has appeared in, Diamond Tiara was the worst in this episode and she got me so angry (by the way, this is pretty much the same amount of anger that Mr. Krabs gave me in "The Krabby Kronicle"). I also really didn't like Rarity in this episode. I mean, she definitely did NOT anger me like Diamond Tiara but I didn't really like how she acted when every other pony was hurt by their privacy on the newspaper and all Rarity says is "Well, it's gossip... have a sense of humor" but yet Rarity gets angry once she sees a story about her. Rarity is the Element of Generosity..... right? well, she didn't seem so generous over there so yeah that just bugged me plus the fact that the episode just got boring after a while. But to get to the postitives, there were some good humor but it's mostly in the first act though. Only time I laughed in the second act or third act (whichever act it's in) was some of the articles that were published in the newspaper... they were hilarious. I also kinda didn't like how everypony including the Mane 6 wouldn't let the Cutie Mark Crusaders explain to them about the newspaper and all that. The ending was overall just alright. Overall, this was yet.... I guess you can call.... an alright/decent episode of "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic"...... not bad, but it just could have been WAY better. 7/10moreless

    • The store the Cakes are seen in when Pound and Pumpkin are crying is the jewellery store that Big Macintosh goes to in "Hearts and Hooves Day".

    • One of Featherweight's pictures is of Big Macintosh with Twilight Sparkle's old doll, Smarty Pants, which he took for himself back in "Lesson Zero".

    • One of Gabby Gums' stories is "The Great and Powerful Trixie's Secrets Revealed!" Trixie appeared back in "Boast Busters".

    • At the scene where the Cakes are holding onto a crying Pound and Pumpkin at the store, Mr. Cake is seen with the same face he had when he introduced the twins to the other ponies at the hospital at the beginning of "Baby Cakes".

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Scootaloo: We have a Gabby Gums column.
Diamond Tiara: You're lucky I'm nice.

    • Sweetie Belle: Stop the presses!
Press-Operating Colt: Uh... They haven't started yet.

    • Twilight Sparkle: According to this one, the Cakes are breaking up!
      (The Cakes rush in)
      Mrs. Cake: We are?!

    • Twilight: (Reading the paper) "Pinkie Pie is an out of control party animal."
Pinkie Pie: What?! (Reads the article and bursts into tears) It's true! I do have a problem!

    • Diamond Tiara: No more namby pamby stories like last year's editor.
Filly: But Namby Pamby was a great editor.

    • Rarity: My sister would never associate with someone as beastly as Gabby Gums. I resent you even suggesting such a thing, Twilight. Why, she's the most innocent, most lovely...(Finds her diary in Sweetie Belle's saddle bag) Most evil pony in Equestria!

    • Apple Bloom: Oh c'mon, Applejack. You're not mad at us too, are you?
      Applejack: Yep.
Apple Bloom: You're not even gonna talk to us?
      Applejack: Nope.
Big Macintosh: You should be ashamed of yourself. Humiliating your sister and me like that. We don't wanna talk to any of y'all right now, so take your little gossip column and your embarrassing photographs and JUST GO AWAY!

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • The name of the Ponyville newspaper is The Ponyville Express, which is similar in name to The Pony Express, a famous mail service used in the United States from 1860 to 1861.

    • One of the photos in Granny Smith's albums is of the foal Apple Bloom having her diaper tugged at by a puppy Winona. This is a parody of the classic Coppertone ad, wherein a dog tugs at a young girl's bathing suit.

    • Rarity: Et tu, Gabby Gums?

This is a parody of the "Et tu, Brute?" line from William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar.

    • The episode title is a reference to the film L.A. Confidential.
