Here ends S4. S5 s far away, but Comic Con is 2 months away so we might get the usual previews. This time it's Tirek from G1 taht comes back. Here is something for all. Action, drama and two new songs. 10/10
  • Twilight Sparkle goes Super Saiyan

    9.0
If you would like to watch it spoiler free, head over to Equestria Daily where they have links to the hub's free showing of the double episode 25/26 season 4 show. The quick review is Twilight is wondering what princesshood holds for her as she doesn't seem to have much responsibility yet. Terik (a villian from the g1 series) begins to steal magic from random ponies (unicorns, pegasus, and even earth ponies. Princess Celestia sends Discord to stop him but Terik convinces Discord to join him, causing havok in Equestria. As the danger escalates, Celestia, Luna & Cadence give all their magic to Twilight in order for her to stand up to Terik alone. Evenly matched, Twilight must decide to give up her magic to her foe to save her friends or battle on for the sake of Equestria's future.

Overall a very exciting and darker episode than previous villians in My Little Pony, this would perhaps be one episode that should be rated -PG. Even so, it was very exciting and continues the overall moral of friendship can overcome most threats, even major villians like Tirek. Expect flashy new toys soon from Hasbro with rainbow power! A very good episode, my 3ed favorite in the series, next to Winter Wrap up & Magical Mystery Cure. The music was ok, but not anywhere near those 2 former episodes. I would give it a 9 out of 10 score.moreless
  • Thy Kingdom Come

Part two picks up with Twilight being worried about this job, but Celestia explains Tirek has no idea there's a fourth alicorn in Equestria. She's hesitant at first, but agrees to take the power to protect Equestria. The three Princesses gather around Twilight and transfer all their power and goes directly into Twilight. Meanwhile, Discord and Tirek are still terrorizing Equestria, but Discord suddenly feels the change in power, but doesn't tell Tirek.

Back in Ponyville, it's nighttime . . . for some reason. I don't get the reasoning behind this. Spike wakes up and asks if things are okay, which Twilight lies and says yes, but the power in her causes her to twitch and do random magic. Spike mentions that the sun isn't up, to which Twilight realizes it's time to raise it. In a hilarious moment, Twilight struggles to get the moon down and the sun up.

In Canterlot, Shining Armor is seen patrolling the area, but Discord and Tirek come in and incapacitate him. Before passing out, Shining asks Discord how he could do this, which makes him a little uncomfortable. Tirek then goes to the throne room, where all the princesses are and tries to take their magic, but finds out it's too late. Tirek then sends them all to Tartarus.

We cut back to Ponyville, where Twilight is trying to get used to her powers, but it's not going well. All her friends come to check on her, but she states everything is fine. She says she's going back to the Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters and tells the others to stay behind to make sure nopony leaves their homes.

Back at Canterlot, the throne room has been redecorated to Tirek's liking. He gives Discord a necklace, which belonged to someone loyal to him. Suddenly, Tirek sees the glass stained window that has Twilight in her alicorn status, to which Tirek wants to know where she is. Discord informs him that she's in a library in Ponyville. You know Celestia, if you wanted to keep Twilight as a Princess a secret, maybe you shouldn't have made a stained glass for her then.

Anyway, back in Ponyville, the remaining ponies ask about Discord, but he suddenly appears. Discord gives some cucumber sandwiches to Fluttershy and her friends and says they'll be the last good meal they'll have. He then imprisons them in a cage. Tirek shows up and takes the powers away from everypony. Discord is a bit hurt by this, but congratulates Tirek. Tirek then reveals that he never intended to keep Discord around. Since he freed him and used him to get magic, he says he has no use for him anymore. He then proceeds to take Discord's powers and becomes even more powerful. Discord states that the necklace given to him was that of loyalty and gratitude, but Tirek reveals it belonged to his traitorous brother, Scorpan. He leaves the ponies and Discord alone and goes to hunt Twilight.

In the Everfree Forest, Twilight is still trying to get used to her powers and ends up teleporting to different places; one including between a rock and hard place, literally. Tirek then finds Twilight and demands that she give him her power. She teleports away to her library, but Tirek finds her. In one of probably the saddest things in the show, Twilight's library is completely destroyed by Tirek's power. Thankfully, Twilight grabs Owlowiscious before the impact and sees the damage before her.

She naturally gets angry and decides to fight back. The fight scene here is directly something out of Dragon Ball Z; no joke here. This is literally something you'd expect from that show. It's really intense, has over the top explosions, and lots of destruction. As a fan of DBZ, I really love this callback to it. The only thing missing is for the music of DBZ to play out. The fight itself is very entertaining to watch and probably the best action scene this show has ever done.

Eventually, Tirek realizes their both at a standstill, but he offers Twilight a chance to save her friends, including Discord, as long as she gives up her magic. Her friends try to convince her not to, but she does agree to it. She even says that Discord has to come with her since he's one of her friends. Tirek agrees and takes Twilight's magic away from her. Discord then laments about how he was betrayed and realized just how important his friends are to him. He gives Twilight the necklace and says that it's a sign of true friendship and is telling the truth. The necklace then glows a rainbow color and Twilight realizes this is the final piece.

Twilight places the necklace on the chest, which turns into a key, and thus unlocks it. Suddenly, the Tree of Harmony glows and a beam of light surrounds Twilight and the other Element Bearers. Suddenly they disappear briefly before each one is shown in their Rainbow Power form. Honestly, I knew this was coming considering all the promotions for it and the toys I saw.

Anyway, they all go to confront Tirek, but he tries to take their magic away. However, it's of no use and through the use of a beam of magic, all of Tirek's power is drained away. So Triek is placed back in Tartarus, this time in a jail cell, the magic stolen is returned back to those who lost it, and the Princesses are freed from their prison. The group teleports back to the chest, where it glows a rainbow color and launches itself right to Ponyville. The chest acts like a seed and grows into . . . a tree house right out of Codename: Kids Next Door. Seriously, look at that thing. I know it's a castle, but it looks like a KND tree house. I almost expect to see Numbah 3 show up and scream in delight as she hugs the ponies.

So as the Rainbow Power fades away from the ponies, Rarity asks whose castle it is, to which Celestia shows up and says it's Twilight's. They all go inside and Celestia asks Twilight if she knows what her role is now. Twilight says she knows her role is to spread the magic of friendship across Equestria. We then see seven thrones around a small room. All the thrones belong to each Element of Harmony bearer, but the last one goes directly to Spike, which I approve of. So he's a hero in the Crystal Empire and gets his own throne? Spike truly is a king now. Twilight sees Discord hiding, most likely in shame, but pulls in in for a group hug. Afterwards, he asks where his throne is, to which Fluttershy says he's not there yet.

So we're given an epilogue, where our main characters have a song. We even see the rainbow power go around to certain places like Coco Pommel in her new studio, Cheese Sandwich, the Breezies, Silver Shill, and then back to Discord. So our finale ends with the Mane 7 getting a picture as Twilight sings the final words of the song.

Alright, let's step back from this for a moment. With everything that just happened there, did all the elements come together for an epic finale? Well, I can honestly say in terms of story, this was one of the best season finales I've ever seen on the show. The story is really well done with a conflict that's really good and I don't have any really big faults about it. It addresses a problem that's been persistent this entire season: why Twilight's role as Princess hasn't been big. I admire the attempt at the explanation and I'm glad to see some reasoning behind this. For what it does though, Twilight goes through a good arc that strengthens her character and brings her role as Princess to something new.

The villain, Triek, is nothing but pure awesomeness. He's threatening, intimidating, manipulative, and his design is well done. I'd say he's on par with Queen Chrysalis in terms of best villain in the show.

Discord was also really well done in this finale. He has a major character arc that makes him realize how much of an influence the Mane 7 had on him. It's good character development that I welcome and it does make me wonder what they'll do with him next season.

The comedy, while downplayed for the most part, was pretty well done. Pinkie was pretty good in some of her antics, but I loved when Twilight tried to raise the sun. It was hilarious to watch that. Discord was also really good with him doing Mary Poppins and Patton references.

The songs are a mixed bag from me. The first one sung by Twilight and the three Princesses isn't bad, but it could've been better. I know what they were going for, but the lyrics sound a bit awkward. It sounds too wordy and jumbled. However, hearing Luna sing for the first time made up for it as she's got a good singing voice. Cadence, on the other hoof, stole the thing completely as she sung just as wonderful as she did in the season 2 finale. The other song at the end of the finale was better as it was more catchy, upbeat, and the lyrics weren't as awkward. They're not the best songs, but they're good for what they are.

Despite my praises, I have one big problem with this episode.

The final battle with Tirek is anticlimactic.

The final battle between Tirek and Twilight and her friends should've been a little more drawn out. Have each pony give their own blow to Tirek, then you can use the magical beam to beat him. Instead, he's beaten in less than 20 seconds. I know the episode was nearing the end, but they could've handled the final fight better. While I appreciate the battle between Twilight and Tirek, the last fight should've been done a bit better.

That issue aside though, Twilight's Kingdom is the best finale the show has ever put out. It's story is well done and finally elevates Twilight's position as Princess. The villain is really well done and easily one of the best the show has. There's plenty of character developments. The jokes are handled well. It's a triumphant way to end the season and there's a lot to look forward to in season five with this. Even if you aren't a Twilight fan, this is a finale that was well done, well executed, and the best finale for this show's season. All we can do now is wait for next season and see where they go with this.

Twilight: I don't think that's going to work.

    • Tirek: I should've known you would want to have Equestria all to yourself.
Discord: Oh, I'm not doing this for me. I'm doing it for my friends. Just between you and me, it's mostly for Fluttershy.

    • Spike: (While walking through the Crystal Empire) Seems like only yesterday I was saving this place from being totally destroyed. Hey, you guys remember that?
Rainbow Dash: You only mentioned it about 15 times on the train here.
Rarity: Yes, and we never hear a peep out of you about your exploits.
      Rainbow Dash: Point taken.

    • Discord : Seems I possess a magic that gives me quite an important role in Equestria. Maybe they should make me an alicorn princess.
      Rainbow Dash: In your dreams.
Discord : Oh, I never dream of such things. Ask Princess Luna.

    • Tirek: "Is he friend or is he foe?" the pony wonders. I can assure you I am no friend. I am Tirek, and I will take what should have been mine long ago.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • Terminator 2: Judgment Day:

Discord alludes to this movie by wearing the same outfit as T-1000, a character from that movie while also splitting his head in the same way when Tirek attacks him.

    • The back story that revolves around Scorpan betraying Tirek is similar to the plot of the My Little Pony film Rescue at Midnight Castle.

    • Discord arrives to the mane six while riding an umbrella and wearing an outfit similar to that of Mary Poppins.

    • As Discord is about to leave, he is seen riding a scooter that looks similar to the one that Blythe drives in another Hasbro show, Littlest Pet Shop.
