Oddly enough, my parents consider them the same thing. Anyone ever heard of this before?. Besides the big eyes I just don't see the connection

In the original series their eyes weren't really that big, so I really don't see how your parents consider MLP anime. Unless they consider all brightly colored animated shows to be anime...

Nearly every animated show is sent over to Japan or Korea to be animated, but that doesn't mean that it's anime. Anime is a style of animation made for Japanese TV audiences. To say that everything animated in Japan is anime means that the crap on Cartoon Network is anime, too. (I'm not talking about the actual anime they show on Adult Swim, I'm talking about shows like "Ed, Edd and Eddy" and stuff like that.)

Well, anime is simply the Japanese word for animation, but the rest of the world has defined it as that highly recognizable style of Japanese animation. MLP isn't and never has been an anime by that standard; however, I can definitely see how comparisons could be drawn and I would imagine that, particularly in the latest series, anime has had some influence upon it. =)
