      • Now, while Uncle Charley may have had a heart of gold beneath that prickly persona, we couldn't get past his gruff exterior. He scared the stuffing out of most kids. But William Demarest was a tough man, coming from a childhood that included performing with his brothers (playing the cello, telling jokes, etc.) on street corners to support his mom and then moving onto physical comedy and gags doing vaudeville in the '20s and '30s. ("I've done more pratfalls than any man on two feet," the actor told TV Guide in 1966. "Once a doctor told me I couldn't live till I was 50 if I kept on doing 'em.") Most people might not know that the actor lived until the ripe old age of 91 years, but if you wanted to be technical, I can tell you that he was actually two months shy of what would have been his 92nd birthday when he died!

      • Virginia Lewis will still play Charley's music partner in the next two seasons, but will play a different named character. Guest star Winifred Coffin (1911-86) was also known as Winnie Collins. When her character decides to unceremoniously remove Charley from the musical quartet he has a great line which bears repeating: "How do you like that? Kicked out of my own group by a dame with two chins!"
