  • A rather ordinary episode constrained by lack of detail of the situation and not a lot of on-the-mark comedy.

    5.5
Steve can't seem to admit his growing feelings for schoolteacher Barbara Harper.

As one of the last "major" events in the long history of the program, Steve and Barbara's eventual marriage was one of the more low key. Considerable time is spent in this episode reviewing the awkwardness each character feels about growing closer and wanting to bring up the idea of marriage. The comedy springs from everyone else in the family wanting to talk about it. Fans of the series should note that Steve again only refers to "three" children.

It falls a bit flat as the meddling is something everyone has seen before and Fred MacMurray plays pensive and unanimated about it all. Charlie is given more shtick, but it's actually Ernie who comes off as funniest - he always seems to be more confident at the time his voice was changing. Eleanor Audley shows her usual professional work in the role of Barbara's mother.

The idea of two older people coming together is always a bit awkward in the TV era when there was never divorce and instead, previous spouses had passed away. Not a lot of novel dialog distinguishes the situation in this episode.moreless
