  • Steve sacrifices a weekend in Rio to bond with his sons, two of whom would rather he'd have gone to Rio.

Steve has happily been taking Robbie on fishing trips at the start of every trout season for the past few years. Robbie, however, is tired of it and wants out, but doesn't have the heart to tell Steve, and Chip dreads the day when it's his turn. Ernie, however, is eager to go. Robbie and Chip smell an opportunity for both to get out of it. They want to pass the torch to him so that way Robbie won't have to go this year, and Chip won't have to go next. They point out to Steve that Ernie is so eager to join his dad fishing that it would be a shame to disappoint him, and that it would solidify Ernie's feeling of acceptance into the family. Steve, however, sees it differently. He reminds them that Ernie is indeed his son, and their brother, and that by making Ernie wait his turn, he is in fact treating Ernie like a father should treat his son, whereas giving him special treatment would be treating him like a guest. Robbie and Chip, while still not looking forward to the fishing trips, see the wisdom of their dad's thinking. They should be grateful that they have a dad who cares not just about pleasing them, but in preparing them for manhood, and bonding with them.moreless
