Steve and the Computer
AIRED:
Steve is having nightmares and his vision of the future has a computer named Betsy join the family. It interferes with wedding plans when it selects different mates for Mike and Sally. Hoping to prove the computer wrong, Mike decides he will have Steve fill out a questionaire for his dad and his mother. His reasoning is that they will submit the two forms and the computer will pick someone else for their perfect match, thereby proving to Sally how wrong the computer can be. But lo and behold the computer mates Steve and Mike's mom.moreless

      • As mentioned elsewhere in this guide, guest star Julie Parrish passed away in October, 2003 from ovarian cancer.

      • The child actors playing the first blonde haired boy and the neighborhood kid named Bobby Ringabud are not credited.

      • The Computer featured in this episode, was furnished by the Univac Division of Sperry-Rand Corporation. The Univac micro-processing computer was created in 1950. In 1955, Sperry and Remington Rand merged to form Sperry-Rand. In 1986 Sperry-Rand and Burroughs merged to form Unisys Corporation, which remains the company's corporate name today.

      • This episode is a parody of what the vision of computers were like from a 60s perspective. Flash forward to the present, and whilst virtually every business has a computer connected to a mainframe or network, the humble home PC is still a huge part of our lives, but not to the extent depicted in this episode. And can you imagine if your own PC was a large as the one used here? Now, that would be a nightmare!

      • Steve explains to Mike that the questionaire he filled out on behalf of Mike's mom represented the couple after 12 years of marriage, a mariage full of discussion, compromises and even fights. Steve then reads a letter from the first Mrs. Douglas calling off the wedding saying they had nothing in common and that their views were so far apart, the marriage could never succeed. The letter is very specific in telling the differing views that each parent had. So- for those of you who were wondering about the first Mrs. Douglas, this does show that she was not totally dismissed as a non entity.
